Spotted
A pale, relatively small lark with sandy-brown plumage, lacking prominent streaking, which helps it blend seamlessly into its desert surroundings. It has a slightly plump appearance and short tail.
Where to spot
Sandy and stony deserts, semi-arid plains, and wadis across parts of North Africa, the Arabian Peninsula, and the Middle East.
How to spot
Look for its plain, unstreaked plumage. It often forages actively on the ground. Its calls are distinctive, often a soft, fluty whistle. Patience and scanning open ground are essential.
When to spot
Year-round resident. Most active during the cooler parts of the day (early morning, late afternoon) to avoid intense desert heat.
Dunn's Lark is one of the more nomadic desert larks, often moving in response to rainfall and the availability of seeds and insects across its vast arid range.
