Widespread across arid and semi-arid regions from North Africa and the Middle East eastward through Central Asia to western China. It inhabits deserts, semi-deserts, rocky hills, and cultivated steppes.
How to spot
Look for them foraging on the ground in open, stony areas. Their distinctive black and yellow wing pattern is obvious in flight. Listen for their simple, often buzzing calls.

Visible year-round throughout its range. Most active during the cooler parts of the day. Winter flocks can be quite large and conspicuous.
