Spotted
The Dark Pewee is a medium-sized, somber-plumaged flycatcher that inhabits the humid montane forests of Central America. Its coloration helps it blend into the dappled light of the forest understory.
Where to spot
Found in humid montane evergreen forests and cloud forests from Mexico through Central America to western Panama.
How to spot
Look for its dark plumage and upright posture in the mid-story and sub-canopy. Listen for its simple, often two-noted calls.
When to spot
Active during daylight hours, often more vocal in the mornings. It is a resident species, observable year-round.

Despite its somewhat drab appearance, this pewee has a subtle eye-ring that can be a useful identification mark.
