Widespread in arid and semi-arid savannas, grasslands, and acacia scrub across sub-Saharan Africa. Often found near water sources.
How to spot
Look for it on the ground, foraging for seeds, or at water sources. The male's red throat band is unmistakable. Females are similar but lack the red band.
When to spot
Year-round. Easily observed, often in large flocks, especially at waterholes.
These finches are highly social and often breed communally, sometimes even utilizing abandoned nests of other bird species.
