Endemic to the highlands of Costa Rica and western Panama. Inhabits humid montane forests, forest edges, and second growth.
How to spot
Look for it foraging on or near the ground in dense vegetation. The rufous crown and dark facial markings are good identification features. Listen for its strong, whistled song.
When to spot
Resident year-round. Most active and vocal during the breeding season (typically March-July).
