The Rufous-tailed Sparrow is a small, attractive sparrow found in dry, open habitats of Mexico and Central America. It is distinguished by its rufous-colored tail and head stripes.
Where to spot
Found from southern Mexico through Central America (Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua, Costa Rica). Inhabits dry scrub, thorn forest, and cultivated areas.
How to spot
Look for it in dry, bushy areas. The rufous tail and head stripes are prominent. Listen for its song, which is often a series of clear, whistled notes.
When to spot
Resident year-round. Most vocal and visible during the breeding season (spring to summer).
