Spotted
This hybrid results from a cross between two closely related and often co-occurring species, the Common Goldeneye and the Barrow's Goldeneye. Identification can be challenging due to their similarities.
Where to spot
Found in areas where the breeding or wintering ranges of both parent species overlap, predominantly in western North America.
How to spot
Look for individuals with mixed head patterns (e.g., a rounder head with a hint of a crescent patch, or an angular head with a round patch) or intermediate bill shapes that don't quite fit either parent species perfectly.
When to spot
Most frequently observed during winter and migration, when both species inhabit similar open water environments.
