Mute Swan x Black Swan Hybrid

Spotted
This striking hybrid combines the Mute Swan's white plumage and orange bill with the Black Swan's dark body and red bill. The result is often a grey-bodied swan with white patches, or a white swan with dark smudges and a mixed bill color.
Where to spot
Most commonly found in parks, zoos, and private collections worldwide where both parent species are present. Rarely observed in the wild.
How to spot
Look for swans that are neither pure white nor pure black. They often have patchy black and white plumage, or a greyish body with varying amounts of white, particularly on the primary feathers. The bill might be mottled orange and red, or show a Mute Swan's knob.
When to spot
Year-round, especially in managed park environments or areas where captive birds may escape.
Known colloquially as 'Blutes' or 'Smudgy Swans', these hybrids are not uncommon in areas where both species are kept together in captivity, and they are sometimes fertile, producing hybrid offspring.
