Spotted
This intriguing duck is a hybrid resulting from a cross between a Muscovy Duck and a Mallard, often encountered in areas with domestic or feral duck populations. It displays a variable mix of features from both parent species, making each individual unique.
Where to spot
Ponds, parks, lakes, and slow-moving rivers, especially in urban or suburban settings with mixed domestic and wild duck populations worldwide.
How to spot
Look for a bulky body and some red caruncular growth on the face (from Muscovy), combined with plumage showing a blend of Mallard's iridescence (particularly on the head) and Muscovy's darker, often mottled body. The tail is often held low, reminiscent of a Muscovy.
When to spot
Year-round, as these hybrids are typically resident and non-migratory.
These hybrids are often sterile, meaning they cannot produce offspring, which is why they are sometimes colloquially referred to as 'mule ducks' in the bird world.
