The Collared Scops Owl is a widespread small owl across East and Southeast Asia, named for the dark collar on its nape. It is a master of camouflage in forested habitats.
Where to spot
Widespread from the Himalayas and China south to Southeast Asia (Myanmar, Thailand, Vietnam, Malaysia). Inhabits various forested and wooded areas, including parks and gardens.
How to spot
Listen for its distinctive, repetitive 'hoo-hoo' or 'pop-pop' call. Look for its small size, mottled brown plumage, and the dark collar. Spotlighting in trees and dense foliage at night.
When to spot
Strictly nocturnal, active from dusk to dawn. Most vocal during breeding season.

This owl often adopts a 'stick-like' posture when threatened, elongating its body and raising its ear tufts to blend seamlessly with tree branches, making it incredibly hard to spot.
