Spotted
The White-throated Tyrannulet is a small flycatcher with a distinct whitish throat, contrasting with its olive-green and yellowish plumage. It inhabits humid montane forests in South America.
Where to spot
Distributed along the eastern slopes of the Andes, from southern Colombia south through Ecuador and Peru, into Bolivia. It prefers humid montane evergreen forests.
How to spot
Scan the mid to upper canopy of montane forests. Look for its diagnostic white throat, often visible when it's calling. Listen for its high-pitched, slightly buzzy or trilled calls, which are very helpful for detection.
When to spot
A permanent resident in its highland habitats. Most active during the early morning hours, foraging for insects.
Its white throat patch is a useful field mark, making it somewhat easier to identify than many of its more subtly marked tyrannulet relatives.
