Spotted
Buergers' Goshawk is a large, powerful raptor endemic to the mountains of New Guinea. It is a forest specialist, preferring dense montane rainforests for hunting and nesting.
Where to spot
Endemic to the central mountain ranges of New Guinea, inhabiting tropical montane rainforests.
How to spot
Requires dedicated and often difficult expeditions into remote montane forests. Look for its powerful flight above the canopy or listen for potential calls in its dense habitat.
When to spot
Extremely rare to observe. Like other forest raptors, it is active during daylight hours, but specific observation patterns are not well established.
This magnificent raptor is one of the most poorly known birds of prey, with very few documented sightings, making it a 'holy grail' for birdwatchers in New Guinea.
