Spotted
The Chestnut-necked Spurfowl is a species native to the highlands of East Africa, characterized by its reddish-chestnut neck and head. It inhabits high-altitude grasslands and moorlands.
Where to spot
Found in high-altitude grasslands, moorlands, heathlands, and open montane forests across Ethiopia, Eritrea, Somalia, Kenya, and Tanzania.
How to spot
Listen for their loud, distinctive calls, which can reveal their presence even when hidden. Scan open areas near cover. They often run rather than fly when disturbed, so look for quick movements across the ground.
When to spot
Most active and vocal in the early morning and late afternoon. Calls are more frequent during the breeding season.
This spurfowl is particularly well-adapted to the cooler, often misty conditions of its high-altitude habitat, which can be challenging for other galliforms.
