The Chatting Kingfisher is a distinctive kingfisher species known for its vibrant blue and white plumage and its characteristic vocalizations. It is found across several Pacific island groups.
Where to spot
Widespread across the Samoan and Tongan archipelagos, Wallis and Futuna, and other central Pacific islands. It inhabits a range of habitats including native forests, secondary growth, coastal vegetation, and gardens.
How to spot
Listen for its characteristic chattering calls, which are quite loud and distinct. Look for it perched on prominent branches or wires, scanning for prey on the ground or in foliage. Its bright colors make it relatively easy to spot.
When to spot
Active throughout the day, but often more vocal and visible during the cooler parts of the morning and late afternoon. It is a resident species, present year-round.
