The Canyon Towhee is a large, rather plain brown sparrow of the American Southwest, known for its uniform dull plumage and a rusty patch beneath its tail. It is a common resident of arid canyons and scrublands.
Where to spot
Found in the southwestern United States (Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, Oklahoma, Colorado) and Mexico. It inhabits dry, rocky canyons, desert washes, scrublands, and suburban areas.
How to spot
Look for its uniformly drab brown plumage, a faint eye-ring, and a rust-colored vent (under the tail). It spends much of its time on the ground, often kicking with both feet. Listen for its distinctive metallic 'chink' call.

Resident year-round throughout its range. Active throughout the day, often foraging on the ground.
