The Rufous-winged Sparrow is a small, streaky sparrow with distinctive rufous (rusty-red) wing patches. It is found in arid grasslands and scrublands of the southwestern U.S. and Mexico.
Where to spot
Found in the southwestern United States (Arizona) and northwestern Mexico. Inhabits arid grasslands, desert scrub, and open mesquite woodlands.
How to spot
Look for it foraging on the ground or singing from a low perch in thorny scrub. The rufous wing patches are a key identification feature. Listen for its distinctive song.
When to spot
Resident year-round in much of its range. Most vocal and active during the breeding season (spring to summer).
This sparrow is highly adapted to arid environments and can often be found where cacti and thorny bushes provide cover.
