Spotted
The Volcano Junco is a robust, dark-plumaged junco adapted to the high-altitude, volcanic landscapes of Central America. It features a dark gray head, plain dark back, and often pale eyes.
Where to spot
Found in the highlands of Costa Rica and western Panama, specifically on the slopes of volcanoes and high mountain ranges. It inhabits páramo, stunted elfin forest, and high-elevation scrublands.
How to spot
Seek it out in high-elevation open scrub and treeline habitats. Look for its uniform dark gray to blackish plumage, with often distinct white outer tail feathers visible in flight. Its call is a harsh 'chip' and its song is a simple trill.
When to spot
Resident year-round in its high-altitude habitat. Active during daylight hours, often foraging in open areas or near low vegetation.
