Spotted
The Canarian Oystercatcher (Haematopus meadewaldoi) was an extinct species of oystercatcher endemic to the Canary Islands. It was an all-black oystercatcher, similar in appearance to the African Oystercatcher.
Where to spot
This species is extinct and cannot be observed in the wild. Historically, it was confined to the Canary Islands, particularly Fuerteventura and Lanzarote.
How to spot
As an extinct species, direct observation is not possible. Information is derived from historical accounts and preserved specimens.
When to spot
Not applicable as the species is extinct.
This species was last reliably seen in 1913, and its extinction is largely attributed to overhunting and the collection of its eggs, combined with habitat changes.
