Where to spot
Endemic to California, USA, and northwestern Baja California, Mexico, inhabiting dense chaparral, coastal sage scrub, and oak woodlands.
How to spot
Its large size, long, strongly decurved bill, and overall dusky-brown plumage are key. Look for it skulking in dense brush. Listen for its rich, varied, and melodious song, often given from within cover.
When to spot
Active throughout the day, especially in the early morning. Resident and observable year-round.
