Spotted
The Black Catbird is a sleek, all-black mimid found in Central America. Its dark plumage is often glossy, and it is known for its distinctive cat-like calls, similar to its Gray Catbird relative.
Where to spot
Endemic to the Yucatán Peninsula in Mexico and northern Belize, inhabiting dense tropical and subtropical dry forests, scrub, and sometimes gardens.
How to spot
Look for its uniform glossy black plumage. Its cat-like call is the most reliable way to locate it, as it often skulks in dense vegetation. Patience is key.
When to spot
Most active during the early morning and late afternoon. Can be observed year-round within its resident range.
Despite its common name, the Black Catbird's 'meow' call is less harsh than that of the Gray Catbird, often described as a softer, more plaintive sound.
