Spotted
A small, pale lark perfectly camouflaged for its desert habitat, often appearing sandy-brown with subtle streaking. It has a relatively short, stout bill and typically lacks prominent head markings.
Where to spot
Arid and semi-arid regions, including stony deserts, rocky plains, and sparse grasslands across North Africa, the Middle East, and into Central Asia.
How to spot
Look for its drab, camouflaged plumage against the ground. It often runs rather than flies when disturbed. Listen for its high-pitched, rather simple song delivered from the ground or a low perch.
When to spot
Active year-round in its range. Best observed during cooler parts of the day, such as early morning or late afternoon, to avoid midday heat.
Desert Larks are incredibly adapted to extreme heat and aridity, often obtaining all their necessary moisture from their insect and seed diet, rarely needing to drink water.
