Spotted
A robust and deep-diving Arctic seabird, the Brünnich's Guillemot (or Thick-billed Murre) is similar to the Common Guillemot but possesses a noticeably thicker bill. It forms immense breeding colonies on sheer cliffs and is highly adapted for foraging in cold, deep waters.
Where to spot
Found in high Arctic and sub-Arctic regions, breeding on steep coastal cliffs. They winter in ice-free northern oceans, extending south to temperate waters.
How to spot
Look for its distinctly thicker bill compared to the Common Guillemot, and a diagnostic white stripe on the upper mandible in breeding adults. Observe them at their dense, noisy cliff colonies or diving expertly in the water.
When to spot
Best observed during their breeding season in the summer at their massive cliff colonies. Otherwise, they are pelagic and can be observed offshore during migration or in wintering areas.

Brünnich's Guillemots are exceptional divers, capable of reaching depths of over 100 meters (330 feet) in pursuit of fish and crustaceans, holding their breath for several minutes.
