The Blue-throated Starfrontlet is a stunning hummingbird with a vibrant iridescent blue-green throat patch (gorget) and an overall shimmering green body. It is a magnificent inhabitant of the high-altitude cloud forests of the Andes.
Where to spot
Found in the humid montane forests and cloud forests of the eastern Andes, specifically in Colombia and Venezuela. It typically occurs at elevations between 2,000 to 3,400 meters (6,500 to 11,200 feet).
How to spot
Look for them at flowering plants and feeders, often perching conspicuously to defend territories. The brilliant blue throat is a key identifier, which becomes most visible in good lighting conditions.
When to spot
Active throughout the day, particularly during the early morning and late afternoon when foraging is most intense. It is a resident species and can be observed year-round.
