Spotted
The Blue Rock Thrush is a beautiful, solitary bird of rocky environments, known for the male's deep blue plumage and melodious, fluty song. It is often seen perched conspicuously on cliffs or buildings.
Where to spot
Found in rocky coastal areas, mountains, ravines, and old buildings across Southern Europe, North Africa, and large parts of Asia. Some populations are migratory, others resident.
How to spot
Look for it on steep rocky cliffs, ancient ruins, or tall buildings, often perching high up. The male's uniform deep blue is unmistakable; females are duller, grey-blue with subtle barring on the underparts.
When to spot
Can be observed year-round in resident populations. Migratory populations are best seen during breeding (April-August) and migration (March-April, September-October).

The Blue Rock Thrush is the national bird of Malta, where it is known as 'Merill.' Its preference for cliffs makes it a common sight along the island's coastline.
