Spotted
The Blue-capped Cordon-bleu is a stunning blue finch found in arid and semi-arid regions of East Africa. Males are almost entirely blue with a subtle reddish wash on the belly, lacking the red cheek patch of its relative.
Where to spot
Found in arid and semi-arid savannas, acacia scrub, and thornbush of East Africa, including Ethiopia, Somalia, Kenya, and Tanzania.
How to spot
Look for it foraging on the ground or in low thorny bushes. Its overall blue plumage with no red cheek is the key identification feature.
When to spot
Year-round. Best observed during early mornings and late afternoons when foraging activity is highest.
Unlike the Red-cheeked Cordon-bleu, this species typically lacks any red on the face, distinguishing it by its more uniform blue coloration.
