Spotted
The Blackish Chat-Tyrant is a medium-sized, overall dark flycatcher found in the humid montane forests of the Andes. Its somber plumage helps it blend into the dim forest interior.
Where to spot
Found in humid montane and cloud forests along the Andes, from Venezuela south through Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, and Bolivia.
How to spot
Look for its dark plumage and upright posture in the mid-story and sub-canopy. Listen for its distinctive, often sharp or buzzy calls.
When to spot
Active during daylight hours, often more vocal in the mornings. It is a resident species, observable year-round.
Despite its dark coloration, it possesses a subtle pale eye-ring that can be a useful identification feature in the field.
