The Black-throated Antshrike is a large and robust antshrike with a distinctive black throat patch in males. It is a secretive inhabitant of the forest understory in western Amazonia.
Where to spot
Dense undergrowth of humid lowland rainforests, often near bamboo thickets or vine tangles, found in western Amazonia (e.g., Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, Brazil).
How to spot
Listen for its loud, clear, rising and falling 'whistle-whistle-whistle' song. Patiently scan the dense undergrowth. It often responds to playback, offering a better chance for a glimpse.
When to spot
Resident year-round. Most active and vocal during the early morning and late afternoon. Calls can be heard throughout the day.
