Spotted
A widespread and relatively common tityra species found throughout much of the Neotropics. Males are mostly white with a black tail and a prominent red facial mask.
Where to spot
Humid lowland and foothill forests, forest edges, and semi-open areas from Panama south through much of tropical South America.
How to spot
Look in the canopy and upper mid-story, often perching conspicuously on exposed branches. The male's white body, black tail, and red facial skin are key identifiers. Listen for its loud, raspy 'zheep-zheep' calls.
When to spot
Year-round resident. Active throughout the day, often more vocal in the early morning and late afternoon.
Tityras have a distinctive, somewhat raucous call that is often heard in the rainforest canopy.
