Spotted
The Black Sparrowhawk is a large and striking African raptor, distinctively all black (or very dark brown) in plumage. It is a powerful hunter of medium to large birds.
Where to spot
Widespread across sub-Saharan Africa. It inhabits forests, woodlands, plantations, and increasingly, suburban areas with mature trees.
How to spot
Look for its large size and entirely dark plumage. It often perches prominently on tall trees or poles, or can be seen soaring. Listen for its loud, far-carrying calls.
When to spot
Active during daylight hours, often seen hunting in the early morning or late afternoon. It is resident in most of its range.
This hawk often preys on large species like pigeons, doves, and even francolins, demonstrating its remarkable strength and aerial hunting skills.
