Spotted
The Black-mantled Goshawk is a medium-sized raptor easily identified by its striking black upperparts. It is a secretive forest species found in New Guinea.
Where to spot
Endemic to the island of New Guinea and its satellite islands. It primarily inhabits tropical moist lowland and montane forests.
How to spot
Requires patient scanning of the forest interior and edges. Listen for its distinctive calls, which may be the first indication of its presence before a visual sighting.
When to spot
Active during daylight hours, but its secretive nature and dense habitat make observations challenging. Likely most active during early morning and late afternoon.
This goshawk's bold black mantle provides excellent camouflage in the dappled light of the dense rainforest understory, allowing it to ambush unsuspecting prey.
