Spotted
A sexually dimorphic lark, males are almost entirely glossy black, especially in breeding plumage, while females are duller, brownish, and streaked. Both sexes have a heavy, conical bill.
Where to spot
Open steppes, dry grasslands, and semi-deserts, primarily in the Caspian Steppe and parts of Central Asia, including Kazakhstan and Russia.
How to spot
Males are unmistakable due to their black plumage. Females are more cryptic. Look for them foraging on the ground. Listen for their varied, somewhat lark-like song.
When to spot
Breeding season (spring/early summer) is ideal for observing males in their striking black plumage and performing display flights. Migratory in parts of its range.
