Where to spot
Open sandy areas, dry cultivation, riverbeds, and barren plains across parts of the Indian subcontinent (India, Pakistan, Nepal, Bangladesh).
How to spot
Look for its cryptic plumage against the ground. It often runs rather than flies. Listen for its distinctive, slightly buzzing and trilling song, often given from a low perch or in flight.

Year-round resident. Most active and vocal during the breeding season, which typically occurs during the cooler, drier months (late autumn to spring).
