Spotted
The Black-eared Fairy is a tiny, ethereal hummingbird known for its brilliant green plumage, pristine white belly, and distinctive black patch behind the eye. It moves with incredible agility through the forest.
Where to spot
Widespread across the Amazon basin and adjacent humid lowlands of South America, from Colombia and Venezuela south to Bolivia and Brazil. Inhabits lowland rainforests and forest edges.
How to spot
Look for its small size, bright green upperparts, white underparts, and prominent black 'ear' patch. It often feeds at mid-to-high levels in the forest and can be seen darting quickly between flowers. Its overall 'clean' appearance helps differentiate it.
When to spot
Year-round. Active throughout the day, often seen during the morning and late afternoon when foraging.

Like other 'fairies,' this species has relatively short, straight bills and often employs a unique feeding strategy of 'hawking' insects mid-air, in addition to nectaring from flowers.
