Spotted
The Scintillant Hummingbird is a diminutive and highly active species, known as the smallest bird in Costa Rica and Panama, celebrated for its iridescent plumage.
Where to spot
Found in cloud forests, forest edges, and disturbed areas at mid-to-high elevations in Costa Rica and western Panama.
How to spot
Look for tiny, darting movements around flowering plants, especially those with small tubular flowers. Its small size makes it easily overlooked, but its high-pitched, squeaky calls can give away its presence.
When to spot
Resident year-round. Most active in the morning and late afternoon, when flowering plants produce the most nectar.
