Spotted
The Bearded Scrub Robin (*Tychaedon quadrivirgata*, now *Cercotrichas quadrivirgata*) is an active African scrub robin easily recognized by its distinctive black malar stripe (or 'beard') on its otherwise pale face. It has a rufous-brown back and a long, flicked tail.
Where to spot
Widespread across sub-Saharan Africa, inhabiting dense thickets, riverine scrub, and forest undergrowth, particularly in riparian areas.
How to spot
Look for its distinctive black malar stripe and rufous-brown back. It often forages on the ground, flicking its long tail. Listen for its varied, often mimic-filled song, delivered from within dense cover.
When to spot
Resident year-round. It is often active throughout the day, foraging for insects on the ground or in low vegetation.
Its bold facial markings, particularly the 'beard', give it a striking appearance unique among scrub robins.
