Spotted
Bates's Sunbird is a rather dull-colored sunbird, mostly olive-green with a yellowish belly, lacking the prominent iridescence of many relatives. It inhabits lowland tropical rainforests.
Where to spot
Found in West and Central Africa, including parts of Nigeria, Cameroon, Gabon, and Democratic Republic of Congo, inhabiting lowland tropical rainforests and dense secondary growth.
How to spot
Due to its camouflaged plumage, it can be difficult to spot. Listen for its quiet calls and scan the forest undergrowth and mid-levels for subtle movements. Patience is key.
When to spot
Year-round resident. Often observed foraging quietly in the forest understory or mid-story, particularly in the mornings.
Named after the American naturalist George Latimer Bates, who extensively collected specimens in West Africa, contributing greatly to the region's ornithological knowledge.
