The Barn Swallow is perhaps the most recognizable swallow, with its iridescent blue upperparts, rusty-red face and throat, and long, deeply forked tail streamers. It's a highly aerial insectivore, gracefully swooping through the air.
Where to spot
Globally distributed across most of the Northern Hemisphere, breeding in Eurasia and North America. Winters in Africa, South America, and parts of Asia. Often found near human habitation, farms, and open countryside.
How to spot
Easily identified by its deep steel-blue upperparts, rusty throat and forehead, and especially its long, deeply forked tail with white spots. Observe its graceful, swooping flight as it catches insects over open fields or water.

Common from spring to autumn in its Northern Hemisphere breeding grounds. Migratory flocks are prominent during spring and autumn passage. Absent from breeding areas in winter.
