The Bar-crested Antshrike is a striking antshrike with a prominent, often erectile, black-and-white barred crest on the male. It is a resident of montane forests in the Andes.
Where to spot
Humid montane and cloud forests, often in dense undergrowth and bamboo thickets, across parts of the Andes (Colombia and Venezuela).
How to spot
Listen for its distinctive, accelerating 'chew-chew-chew' call. Scan the mid-story and understory for movement. Observe patiently, as they can be shy, but may respond to playback.

Resident year-round. Most active and vocal during the early morning. Calls are more frequent during the breeding season.
