Spotted
The Banded-backed Wren is a medium-sized wren found in Central American dry forests, distinguished by its finely barred back and active, skulking behavior.
Where to spot
Inhabits dry deciduous forests, thorn scrub, and semi-open areas, from southern Mexico south to Costa Rica, primarily along the Pacific slope.
How to spot
Listen for its loud, clear, and often musical song. Look for a medium-sized wren foraging in dense undergrowth or low trees. Try to spot the fine barring on its back and flanks.
When to spot
A year-round resident. Most active and vocal during the early morning and late afternoon.
Its 'pleurostictus' specific epithet means 'side-streaked', referring to the barring on its flanks, which extends onto its back.
