Spotted
The Band-tailed Pigeon is a large, grey pigeon with a distinctive white band on the nape and a broad pale band on its tail, found across western North and South America. It typically inhabits coniferous and mixed forests.
Where to spot
Distributed from western North America (British Columbia south to Baja California and across to the Rocky Mountains) down through Central America and into South America (Andes from Colombia to Argentina).
How to spot
Look for it in mature coniferous or mixed forests, often near oak trees. Identify by its overall grey plumage, white nape crescent, and the pale band across its darker tail. Its deep, owl-like hooting call ('whoo-whoo-whoo') is a good auditory clue.
When to spot
Year-round in parts of its range, migratory in others, particularly northern populations. Best observed during spring and summer in breeding areas, or fall/winter in staging/wintering areas.

This pigeon is one of the few North American species that regularly consumes acorns, making it an important disperser of oak seeds.
