Spotted
This very rare hybrid occurs between the striking Baikal Teal and the more common Eurasian Teal. Such individuals exhibit an unusual combination of plumage patterns, reflecting the distinctive features of both parent species.
Where to spot
Extremely rare and almost certainly observed in areas where the Baikal Teal's wintering grounds or migratory routes overlap with the Eurasian Teal, predominantly in East Asia, though vagrants could appear elsewhere.
How to spot
Look for a small dabbling duck with an unusual head pattern that doesn't fully match a pure Baikal Teal (e.g., less distinct 'spectacles' or different head coloration) or a pure Eurasian Teal (e.g., hints of green or yellow on the face). The body plumage may also show a blend.
When to spot
Best observed during the late autumn and winter months, when Baikal Teals are present in their non-breeding grounds alongside Eurasian Teals.

The Baikal Teal is one of the most stunningly patterned ducks, particularly the male, making any hybrid offspring with a more subtly colored species like the Eurasian Teal exceptionally interesting for birdwatchers.
