Spotted
This category is used for a stiff-tailed duck observation that could be either a Masked Duck or a Ruddy Duck, or an individual whose precise identification is difficult. Both species share similar body shapes and diving behaviors.
Where to spot
Found across the Americas. Masked Ducks are more tropical/subtropical, while Ruddy Ducks have a wider range into temperate North and South America. Look in freshwater wetlands, marshes, and ponds.
How to spot
Pay close attention to bill color (bright blue for male Ruddy, less so for Masked), presence of a black mask (prominent in male Masked), and overall body coloration. Ruddy Ducks are generally more robust. Observe their diving patterns and how they hold their tail.
When to spot
Year-round in their respective ranges. Best observed during the breeding season when males are in distinctive breeding plumage, or during migration when they may gather in larger mixed flocks.
Both Masked Ducks and Ruddy Ducks belong to the group of 'stiff-tailed ducks', characterized by their rigid tail feathers which they can cock upwards, especially when displaying or diving.
