Spotted
The Black Brant (Branta bernicla nigricans) is the darkest of the Brent Goose subspecies, with a uniformly dark, almost black body extending from the head to the tail, punctuated by a prominent white neck collar.
Where to spot
Primarily found along the Pacific coasts of North America and East Asia, from Alaska to Baja California and parts of East Asia. They breed in Arctic North America and Siberia.
How to spot
Identify by its very dark, almost uniformly blackish plumage across the belly, back, and wings, and the more extensive white neck patch that forms a near-complete collar. Observe them foraging in intertidal zones.
When to spot
Best seen during their extensive autumn (September-November) and spring (March-May) migrations, and throughout the winter months (November-March) in their coastal wintering grounds.
Black Brants are highly dependent on eelgrass beds, and their populations are sensitive to changes in these crucial marine habitats along their Pacific flyway.
