The Alexandrine Parakeet (Psittacula eupatria) is a large, vibrant green parrot native to the Indian subcontinent and Southeast Asia, named after Alexander the Great who is believed to have transported these birds to Europe. Known for its impressive size and loud calls, this species has also established significant feral populations in various urban areas across the globe due to escaped pet birds.
Where to spot
Look for Alexandrine Parakeets in a variety of habitats, including woodlands, agricultural fields, urban parks, large gardens, and palm groves. In their native range, they prefer forest edges and cultivated areas, while introduced populations thrive in city environments. They are often seen near food sources, such as fruit trees or bird feeders.
How to spot
Listen for their distinctive loud, piercing shrieks and squawks, which are often given in flight or while perched in groups. They are very vocal birds. Visually, identify them by their large size, overall green plumage, prominent red beak, a large maroon patch on the wings, and in males, a black neck ring and a rose-pink band on the nape. They have a strong, direct flight pattern, often seen flying in pairs or small flocks.
When to spot
Alexandrine Parakeets are most active during the day, particularly in the early morning and late afternoon when foraging. They often gather in large, noisy communal roosts at dawn and dusk. As a non-migratory species, they can be observed year-round within their established territories, though their activity patterns might shift slightly with seasonal food availability.
