The Alagoas Antwren is an extremely rare and critically endangered species, known only from a few remaining forest fragments in northeastern Brazil. It is a small, elusive bird of the humid undergrowth.
Where to spot
Critically endangered and restricted to highly fragmented humid Atlantic Forest in Alagoas and Pernambuco states, northeastern Brazil.
How to spot
Requires immense effort, local knowledge, and conservation permits to attempt observation within its highly restricted and threatened habitat. Its vocalizations are key for detection, as visual encounters are exceedingly rare.
When to spot
Year-round resident, but incredibly difficult to find. Best sought in early morning.
Named after its discoverer, David Snow, this antwren is among the rarest birds in the world, facing imminent extinction due to extensive habitat destruction in its very limited range, serving as a flagship for conservation.
