Spotted
The African Spotted Creeper is a unique and somewhat cryptic bird, characterized by its mottled brown and white plumage, which provides excellent camouflage against tree bark. Like treecreepers, it forages by spiraling up tree trunks, probing for insects. It is native to sub-Saharan Africa.
Where to spot
Found across various parts of sub-Saharan Africa, including West, Central, and East Africa. It inhabits mature woodlands, savannas with scattered trees, and gallery forests, often favoring areas with large, older trees.
How to spot
Look for its characteristic creeping movements, spiraling up and down tree trunks and large branches. Its camouflaged plumage makes it hard to spot, so patience is key. Listen for its soft, high-pitched calls.
When to spot
Resident year-round in its range. It is most active during the cooler parts of the day, particularly early morning and late afternoon, when it can be seen actively foraging on tree trunks.

Unlike true treecreepers (family Certhiidae) which typically climb upwards and then fly to the base of the next tree, spotted creepers are more versatile and can climb in various directions on the bark.
