Where to spot
Rainforests and dense woodlands of West and Central Africa, from Sierra Leone to Angola and Uganda.
How to spot
Look for a large, dark pigeon with a reddish-purple sheen on its neck and a distinctive grey band across its chest. Observe in the upper canopy of dense forests. Its call is a deep, booming 'doo-doo-doo'.
When to spot
Year-round, active during daylight. Often more vocal in the early morning or late afternoon when temperatures are cooler.
