Spotted
The Abyssinian Woodpecker is a medium-sized species found in the highlands of northeast Africa, characterized by its dull olive-green upperparts, pale underparts, and a red cap in males. It is a specialist of montane forests.
Where to spot
Found in montane forests and woodlands of the Ethiopian Highlands and adjacent parts of Eritrea and Sudan.
How to spot
Look for its olive-green plumage as it moves on tree trunks in montane forests. Listen for its calls, which are generally not as loud as some other woodpeckers, and its drumming.
When to spot
Resident year-round in its highland habitat. Active during daylight hours, often more visible in the mornings when foraging.
This woodpecker often forages by gleaning insects from the bark of highland trees, moving methodically along trunks and branches in search of prey.
