Spotted
The Yunnan Nuthatch is a small, active species, characterized by its grey cap, white supercilium, and bluish-grey upperparts. Like other nuthatches, it skillfully moves up and down tree trunks. This species is endemic to parts of China.
Where to spot
Endemic to a restricted range in southwestern China, primarily in Yunnan and parts of Sichuan. It inhabits montane coniferous forests, particularly pine and mixed pine-oak woodlands, at mid to high elevations.
How to spot
Look for its characteristic climbing behavior on tree trunks and branches, including smaller twigs. Listen for its distinctive, high-pitched calls. The grey cap and white supercilium are key identification features.
When to spot
Resident year-round in its native habitat. Best observed during the cooler parts of the day, particularly early morning, when it can be seen actively foraging.
