Spotted
Weeden's Tyrannulet is a small, relatively new species to science, discovered and described in 2008. It is found in specific regions of eastern Brazil and has a rather nondescript appearance.
Where to spot
Restricted to certain areas of the Atlantic Forest in eastern Brazil. It prefers humid forests and associated secondary growth.
How to spot
Finding this recently described species requires visiting its specific forest habitat in Brazil. Look for its small size and olive-green and grayish plumage in the mid-story. Its calls and subtle behavioral cues are key to distinguishing it from similar tyrannulets.
When to spot
A year-round resident within its limited range. Observation is best in the early to mid-morning when it is most active and vocal.
Its recent discovery highlights the ongoing biodiversity exploration in South America, even for birds that may appear similar to other known species but are genetically distinct.
